"It wasn't the greatest of training camps for Canadians. The Bachelor, Jesse Palmer was unceremoniously cut from the New York Giants. Palmer lost out on the chance to backup Eli Manning to a guy who married a girl from Survivor and another guy who weighs 300-lbs and goes by the name J-Load."

The start of the NFL season is essentially the end of a hibernation period for sports fans. With all apologies to baseball's regular season, the return of football officially kick starts a crowded sports calendar that includes the return of hockey, basketball and MLB playoffs. For women, unfortunately this means that they will once again lose their boyfriends/husbands to fantasy leagues, suicide pools, betting and endless weekend watching for the next four months. Isn't football great?

In what was a relatively quiet off-season, the focus leading into the season had centered on the divas of the league, the Wide Receivers. Randy Moss got traded to the Oakland Raiders and immediately grabbed claim to having the No. 1 selling jersey in the league. The fact the he admitted that he smokes weed from time-to-time just shows Moss' attempt to connect with fans in the Black Hole, although Moss' antics are nothing when you compare them to the Queen Bee of divas, Terrell Owens. T.O. almost won me over as a fan with his heroic Super Bowl performance when he almost single handedly willed the Eagles to a win over the Patriots. T.O. quickly undid all that when he hired super agent Drew Rosenhaus and tried to rework the 7-yr $49M deal he signed just one season earlier. If you missed their preseason performance Donovan McNabb and T.O. hooked up on numerous receptions including a score despite not talking to each other at all. How long will this silent treatment last? Who knows, anything is possible in the world of Terrell. Although silence and T.O. go together about as well as personality and P.Diddy err…sorry Diddy.

Canadian Content: It wasn't the greatest of training camps for Canadians. The Bachelor, Jesse Palmer was unceremoniously cut from the New York Giants. Palmer lost out on the chance to backup Eli Manning to a guy who married a girl from Survivor and another guy who weighs 300-lbs and goes by the name J-Load. Three Canucks were cut from the Seahawks, most notably Jesse Lumsden who failed to even play a down in preseason action due to injury.

Crocodile Tears: Apparently shedding tears on draft day and showing complete adoration for a team that took a chance on drafting him wasn't enough for Bears rookie RB Cedric Benson to sign a deal until camp was near over. It's actually good that Benson is so in touch with his emotions because wouldn't you be crying if your team's biggest offensive weapon is Rex Grossman; a player who's off his feet more than Paris Hilton.

Pairing Harrington up with the Lions WRs is like giving filet mignon to a vegetarian. (Source: AP)

Streak remains intact: The NFL has never had the host team appear in a Super Bowl and that record will certainly remain intact when you consider that this year's Super Bowl is being played in Detroit. Don't get me wrong the Lions have vastly improved their talent over the last few seasons. The Lions have finally found their heir apparent in last year's first round pick Kevin Jones. The receiving corps of Roy Williams, Charles Rogers and Mike Williams is one of the most talented in the league. It's just that when you have Joey Harrington as your starting QB you can't expect your offense to perform up to its potential. Let's just say that giving Harrington a trio of talented WR's is like giving filet mignon to a vegetarian. Oh, and as for that QB backup plan with brining in Jeff Garcia during the off-season, that took a little bit of a nosedive when Garcia broke his fibula.

Detroit shouldn't feel bad though about not breaking the Super Bowl home team streak because the Dolphins are sure to continue the streak when Miami hosts next year's Super Bowl.

Defensive Player of the Year: It's too bad that Jevon Kearse lays claim the nickname "The Freak" because the label would also suit Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers to a tee. Peppers is a unique hybrid of a DE with linebacker abilities and blazing speed. This is the year that he'll officially supplant Ray Lewis, Simeon Rice, Derrick Brooks and Ed Reed as the biggest impact player on defense. Last year Peppers posted 11 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and had 2 interceptions both of which were returned for 97 yards and 46 yards respectively. He also added a highlight reel 60-yd fumble return for a touchdown against the Falcons. This from a guy who's 6-6, 300 pounds.

"I Hate Y'all": Peerless Price leads the early race for quote of the season after he offered up his feelings to press, team and fans after getting cut by the Falcons. It's just too bad that the Cowboys' new receiver didn't end up with the Carolina Panthers. "I Hate Y'All" could have made for a formidable match with RB Rod "He Hate Me" Smart.

Fantasy Tips: After all the favourites are taken in the early rounds don't forget about these players.

Michael Clayton, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Close to 1200yds and 7TDs in his rookie campaign and he only got better as the season went on.
Steven Jackson, RB, St. Louis Rams: Marshall Faulk's successor is ready for the limelight.
Ben Troupe, TE, Tennessee Titans: USC's Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow joins the Titans and brings with him an offensive focus centered on the TE. Looking for this year's Antonio Gates? This is it.
Greg Lewis, WR, Philadelphia Eagles: With Pinkston out for the year and T.O.'s ongoing saga, Lewis will build on last year's great playoff numbers and have a breakout campaign.

Acne team: Let's just chalk this up as one of those rare things that I never saw myself saying. The fact that I believe the Arizona Cardinals will have a breakthrough season is absolutely shocking! Thankfully I can still hold true to never uttering statements like "I am a big Clay Aiken fan", "What a great acting job by Keanu Reeves", "Robin Williams really makes me laugh" or "The Tampa Devil Rays are World Series Champions".

So why the sudden positive feelings for this sad-sack team from the desert? Well, the offence is well suited to impress and surprise a lot of people this year. Kurt Warner has been brought in to team with the talented WR trio of Anquan Bolden, Larry Fitzgerald and Bryant Johnson and thus far this looks like a great combination. Add to the fact that the Cards drafted RB J.J. Arrington and suddenly you're looking at a solid nucleus that is suited to score points in bunches under Head Coach Dennis Green. Plus the Cardinals have an underrated defense that finished in the top half of the league in passing yards and points allowed. DT Bertrand Barry finished second in the league with 14.5 sacks and rookie CB Antrel Rolle taken 8th overall in the draft looks like a playmaker.

Super Bowl Pick:

Miami Dolphins vs. San Francisco 49ers: Just kidding! This is about as likely to happen as Star Jones appearing on the cover of UMM.

Daunte Culpepper and the Minnesota Vikings are poised to have a big season. (Source: AP)

Indianapolis Colts vs. Minnesota Vikings: The Patriots may have been the more obvious pick but I have a feeling that the loss of Tedy Bruschi, Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel will hurt more than we are led to believe. The Colts have added DT Corey Simon from the Eagles and paired up with reigning sack king Dwight Freeney the Colts will have a solid pass rush that will be able to get to the QB quicker and thus force more opportunities for the still learning secondary. The offense speaks for itself and the unit remains virtually intact from the record setting one the Colts trotted out last year.

The NFC is wide-open and a case can certainly be made for the Eagles and Panthers to be here as well. The Vikings may surprise some with their balanced offense and rebuilt defense. With the trading of Randy Moss the Vikings are simply going to rely on spreading offense out to Nate Burleson, Troy Williamson, Travis Taylor, and Koren Robinson. On the other side of the ball the defense has gotten better through the years by solid drafting (DE's Erasmus Jones, Kenechi Udeze) and off-season acquisitions (CB Fred Smoot, S Darren Shaper, DT Pat Williams, LB Napoleon Harris, CB Antoine Winfield).

On the plus side if this Super Bowl materializes we can witness the awkward moment of Paul Tagliabue and the NFL watching Mike Tice like a hawk during Super Bowl week just to ensure he doesn't try to pull another profit on those Super Bowl tix.
